The Ohio Association of Teacher Educators (OATE) is a professional association open to all who work with the preparation of teachers in any environment -- higher education, public and private P-12 schools, state departments of education, regional centers, etc.  The focus of the organization is on the interdependence of the educational system.

The Ohio Association of Teacher Educators:

  • Represents all areas of teacher education and its administration throughout Ohio.
  • Offers opportunities for engaging in dialogue and collective action and issues concerning the profession.
  • Provides for involvement with professional colleagues committed to the improvement of all levels of education.

Focus Statement:

The OATE promotes quality teacher education programs for initial preparation, induction, and continuing professional development.  It also provides individual professional development opportunitites for P-12 school, agency-based, and college/university teacher educators.

 

Our parent organization is the Association of Teacher Educators which serves the same purpose at the national and international level.

 

The OATE is one of the two founding members of the Ohio Confederation of Teacher Education Organizations (OCTEO).  The other organization is the Ohio Association of Colleges of Teacher  Education, an organization of higher education institutions. OCTEO sponsors two conferences each year, fall and spring.

The OATE sponsors five awards each year: Outstanding Cooperating Teacher, Outstanding College Supervisor, Outstanding Mentor, Outstanding Student Teacher, and  Outstanding Field Experience Program.  An additional award is for Distinguished Service to OATE.

OUTSTANDING COOPERATING TEACHER OF THE YEAR

NOMINATION AND SELECTION CRITERIA FOR THE OUTANDING COOPERATING TEACHER 
          A. Employed full-time by local school system.
          B. Supervised student teachers or field experience students during the last year 
          C. Involved in pre-service teacher education for three years or more.
          D. Assisted the college/university as a resource person
          E. Demonstrated exemplary ability and effort in the supervision of field experience 
              students.
            1. Model teaching
            2. Exemplary supervisory behaviors
            3. Other

II. NOMINATION PROCEDURES
          A. Complete cover page (Contact Awards Committee for form)
          B. Letter of nomination by OATE member.
          C. Letters of endorsement (no more than 8 and at least 3) by:
               1. College/University Field Director
               2. Public School Administrator
               3. Student Teacher and/or Field Experience Student
               4. Other
          D. Resume of Cooperating Teacher
          E. Summary of supervisory experiences

February 1 to the OATE Awards Committee. 


OATE OUTSTANDING COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY SUPERVISOR AWARD

The Awards Committee of OATE would appreciate your nomination of an outstanding college/university supervisor. OATE would like to recognize the extremely important role of a school-based teacher educator who has significantly contributed to the theoretical/practical knowledge base of pre-service teachers. We want to recognize the vital support a supervisor provides between the schools and the field experience pre-service teachers. The winning supervisor will receive recognition at the Spring meeting of OATE/OACTE. All nominated will receive a one year free membership in OATE.

The nomination must be submitted by a current OATE member(s). Nominations are limited to one from each institution. Please make sure that your nomination packets are complete before submitting, since nominees can be disqualified due to incomplete materials.

NOMINATION AND SELECTION CRITERIA FOR THE OUTSTANDING COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY SUPERVISOR OF THE YEAR

I. CRITERIA FOR NOMINATION
   A. Has a continuous role (not limited to student teachers) in teacher education field supervision
   B. Demonstrates effective modeling, coaching, and conferencing techniques
   C. Has been identified by the education students, school personnel, and peers as “outstanding”

II. NOMINATION PROCEDURES
   A. Complete Cover Page (Contact Awards Committee for form)
   B. Letter of nomination by OATE Member
   C. Resume of college/university supervisor
   D. Letter from candidate expressing supervisory experience/philosophy
   E. Support letters from (no more than 8 and at least 3):
       Director of Field Experience, Dean or Chair, peers, etc.
       Education Student(s), Cooperating teachers/Classroom teachers
       Building Principal and/or District Administrator, Other

Please submit all nomination materials in one folder/notebook and mail in one envelope

OATE OUTSTANDING MENTOR AWARD

The Awards Committee of OATE would appreciate your nomination of an outstanding mentor. OATE would like to recognize the extremely important role of a school-based teacher educator who has significantly contributed to the theoretical/practical knowledge base of other teachers. We want to recognize the vital support a mentor provides the new teacher. The winning mentor will receive recognition at the Spring meeting of OATE/OACTE. OATE OUTSTANDING STUDENT TEACHER AWARD

The Awards Committee of OATE would appreciate your nomination of an outstanding student teacher. OATE would like to recognize a student teacher who has demonstrated exemplary performance during his/her student teaching experience.

The winner will receive recognition at the Spring meeting of OATE/OACTE.

The nomination must be submitted by a current OATE member(s). Nominations are limited to one from each institution. Please make sure that your nomination packets are complete before submitting, since nominees can be disqualified due to incomplete materials.

NOMINATION AND SELECTION CRITERIA FOR THE OUTSTANDING STUDENT TEACHER OF THE YEAR:

I. CRITERIA FOR NOMINATION
   A. Demonstrated innovation and exemplary practice during student teaching
   B. Has been identified by the education faculty and school personnel as “outstanding”

II. NOMINATION PROCEDURES
   A. Complete Cover Page (Contact Awards Committee for form)
   B. Letter of nomination by OATE Member
   C. Description of the student which reflects exemplary practice
   D. Support letters from (no more than 8 and at least 3):
        Dean or Chair, peers, etc.
        College or University Administration
        Cooperating teacher, faculty, advisor
        Building Principal and/or District Administrator

OATE OUTSTANDING FIELD EXPERIENCE PROGRAM AWARD

The Awards Committee of OATE would appreciate your nomination of an outstanding Field Experience Program. OATE would like to recognize exemplary field experience programs that significantly contribute to the professional development of pre-service teachers.

The director of the winning program will receive recognition for the program at the Spring meeting of OATE/OACTE.

The nomination must be submitted by a current OATE member(s). Nominations are limited to one from each institution. Please make sure that your nomination packets are complete before submitting, since nominees can be disqualified due to incomplete materials.

OATE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

The Awards Committee of OATE would appreciate your nomination of a distinguished Ohio Association of Teacher Educators member. The Distinguished Service Award is designed to formally recognize members of OATE who have been instrumental in helping the organization and the profession. This award recognizes individuals for outstanding service to OATE and to teacher education.

The nomination must be submitted by a current OATE member(s). Nominations are limited to one from each institution. Please make sure that your nomination packets are complete before submitting, since nominees can be disqualified due to incomplete materials.

NOMINATION AND SELECTION CRITERIA FOR THE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

I. CRITERIA FOR NOMINATION
   A. The individual has a minimum of five consecutive years of membership in OATE
   B. The individual has made an outstanding contribution to the well-being, growth, and/or stature of OATE.

II. NOMINATION PROCEDURES
   A. Complete Cover Page (Contact Awards Committee for form)
   B. Letter of nomination by OATE Member
   C. Support letters from (no more than 8 and at least 3):
        Director of Field Experience
        Dean or Chair, peers, etc.
        Education Student(s)
        Cooperating teachers/Classroom teachers
